Cat’s Eye Shells

The Cat’s Eye Shell is the covering for the opening of a sea snail know as the Tapestry Turban (Turbo pentolatus). These coverings are also known as an operculum. They were often set into Victorian era jewelry as a decorative way of repelling the “Evil Eye” and have continued to be used this way into the modern era.

Similarly, they may be set into jewelry with the back facing forward which reveals a lovely spiral design. When they are set this way they are often referred to as Shiva’s Eyes.

Cat’s Eye Shells may be used in mojos, jewelry, placed upon an altar, or carried as a pocket piece for protection against those who would slander, or wish ill upon you.
