Introduction to Trolldom: From Prehistory to Modern Practice with Minta Karlsson

A part of the Voices of Folk Magic Series
This class will livestream via Zoom at 7pm Eastern on Sunday January 15th 2023 and will be available as a video for viewing afterwards

Trolldom, or the folk magical practices of Scandinavia, have been practiced since time out of mind. We see the living vestiges of them in holiday celebrations, folk customs, and even the sensibilities of modern folk immersed or raised in Nordic culture.

In this class, Minta Karlsson will discuss the history of Trolldom, as it’s known today, and where it seems to be going. She will share examples from history and her own life, highlighting the overlap between folk custom and folk magic. Karlsson will explain how Trolldom as a living tradition is continued by it’s practitioners, and what that may look like in a modern context.

Minta Karlsson (she/they) is the co-founder and maker at Needfire LLC and Trollkatt, a ritual candle and spell kit company located in Portland, Maine USA. Karlsson is Trollkunning and a former apprentice of Johannes Björn Gårdbäck, and utilizes their foundational knowledge of a Swedish Folk Magic tradition to inform her practical pursuits. She has spent the last two years deeply immersing herself in various practical magic pursuits, and pulling them into her day to day. Karlsson has presented on post modern animistic folk magic for Magickal Women Conference online series in the past, as well as the Salem Symposium, on subjects of Moon Magic and Trolldom. Karlsson regularly offers workshops through Needfire, with hands on practical tool kits, on the arts of candle and glamour magic.
