Rootwork and Rituals for Resistance: Magic for Social Justice with Doc Beverley Smith

A part of the Voices of Folk Magic Series
This class was livestreamed via Zoom on June 19th 2022 and is now available as a video download.

Doctor Beverley will discuss the role of Rootwork and Conjure (Hoodoo) in terms of social and racial justice. We will acknowledge Juneteenth by affirming that we aren’t yet completely free…not yet, not until we ALL are free. Liberation work is examined in its historical context, originating with an enslaved people trying to survive dire circumstances in a foreign land. As a practical magical system, Hoodoo evolves with the needs and circumstances of the practitioner. We will look at modern-day rootwork as a means of community support, survival, self-care, empowerment, and healing.

Beverley Smith – known in some circles as “Doctor Beverley” – is a mother and a wife, a yogi, a social justice advocate, and a “two-headed conjure doctor” who enjoys living in the mountains in Southern California with her family and two cats, Max and Sweet Puss. She specializes in Sangoma-style Bone Reading and intuitive divination. Beverley Smith enjoys West African and Caribbean literature & folklore, and the ancient art of storytelling – both as a listener and a storyteller. She is an old-style Rootworker, a 2nd degree Reiki practitioner, an empath, an organic gardener, and a relentless voice for racial and restorative justice.
