Conjure, Rootwork, Hoodoo. A tradition whose very existence is a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and foresight of the ancestors. To engage it deeply, conjure should be understood in all aspects, from its history and materia magica, to its traditional ways of looking ahead and behind through divination.
Just as the basis of hoodoo came from African sorcery, added Native American lore, and mixed in elements of European, Jewish, and Asian-American folk magic so too has it developed and utilized forms of divination from the four corners of the world as part of its uniquely American sorcerous synthesis.
During the 20th century, hoodoo became famous for its noted readers, diviners, and workers—from Dr. Buzzard and Aunt Caroline Dye to Bishop Dickerson these gifted and knowledgeable individuals lived by the art of “you don’t tell me, I tell you” and “I can tell you everything there is to know about you.”
Using common items such as bluing, cards, dice, dominoes, bones, shells, curios, coins all the way to the leaves of tea, the grounds of coffee and even the stars themselves hoodoos have aided their communities and themselves by being able to see ahead, warn, and advise.
In this course we will return to the original methods used and truly get to know the roots of these methods, and ways that make conjure so effective. Our approach to these divinatory paths is practical, relational, and immediate. Keeping it real is the watchword for these methods and Brother Yona & Dr. Finch and their guests know and will show you how to ‘keep it real.’
We will explore the history and present-day uses of these traditional divinatory methods through a series of live lectures, Q & A sessions, and practical homework assignments.
We invite you as always to roll up your sleeves, perk up your ears, sharpen your eyes and dig the roots of this profoundly beautiful tradition along with us.
