Conjure, Rootwork, Hoodoo. This tradition’s very existence is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the ancestors. To engage it deeply, conjure should be understood in all aspects, from its history to its materia magica.
Often compared to jazz, rootwork took its basis from African sorcery, added Native American herb and animal lore, and mixed in elements of European, Jewish, and Asian-American folk magic as it developed to create a uniquely American sorcerous synthesis.
During the 20th century, hoodoo became famous for its magical formulas—famous products like Come to Me, Road Opener, & Crown of Success come to mind.
Initially these products were based on traditional herbal, animal & mineral knowledge, yet as time wore on more and more dilution occurred through greater levels of mass production.
In this course we will return to fundamentals and truly get to know the roots, curios, and ingredients that make conjure so effective. Our approach to these materials is practical, relational, and animistic.
Like the best jazz, the possibilities for informed improvisation are endless once the conjurer knows their “scales and arpeggios”.
We will explore the history and present day uses of these materials through a series of live lectures, q & a sessions, and practical magical homework assignments.
We invite you to roll up your sleeves and dig the roots of this profoundly beautiful tradition along with us.
