The Death Shroud is a piece of fabric which an effigy, fetich, or other item may be wrapped within for a period of time to allow for its cleansing through a ritual death before consecration or ensouling.
In its simplest form, this may be a piece of fabric that is white that has been dedicated to the role and purpose of the death shroud. Here we offer a 17"x17" cloth bearing the sigils of the shroud as given within Ensouling the Effigy.
Upon receiving your shroud may wish to further empower and personalize it by infusing it with tinctures, washes, or oils made from botanicals appropriate to funerary workings, such as Cedar (Cedrus spp.) or Willow (Salix spp.). You may also wish to dye it with appropriate natural dyes allied to the dead, such as Black Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris).
It is also recommended that, in preparing the shroud for use, the fabric be taken to a cemetery and buried near the front gate for a full lunar month (full moon to full moon). In doing this, you should ask for the permission and assistance of the guardian of the cemetery gate and leave a small offering of three coins and some tobacco there for them. At the end of a lunar month, you will return to the cemetery, give thanks to the guardian of the gate, retrieve the shroud, and leave another offering of coins and tobacco.
For more information on the death shroud and its use please see Ensouling The Effigy.
